Police are searching for members of a Taiwan-based mix of Scientology and UFO lore across the country.

“Bitter Winter” reported in 2022 about the growing popularity and police repression of UFO religions in China. The largest group, the Galactic Federation (银河联邦), was founded by a college-educated woman named Zheng Hui (郑辉). In 2015, it was designated a “xie jiao” (prohibited “group spreading heterodox teachings,” sometimes translated as “evil cult”). Zheng was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison.
Chinese police are now searching across the entire country for members of another UFO group, which goes by various names. Lin Xianzong (林显宗) established the group in Taiwan and introduced it to China through a lecture tour in 2008. It is also found in the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and Thailand.
According to Taiwanese and Chinese media, Lin was a former student of Scientology, which has a strong presence in Taiwan, particularly in Taichung, where Lin was born in 1957. His group uses a tool called “Mind Wave Meter,” which suspiciously resembles Scientology’s E-meter. Lin claims that in a previous life, he was a religious and political leader on a planet called Shuiyuexing (水悦星), which can be translated as “Water Joy Star.”
After a complicated series of events, the leaders of Shuiyuexing activated a self-destruct device. They sent water, other essential supplies, and the brightest minds from the “Water Joy Star” planet to Planet Earth, including Lin in a previous incarnation. These extraterrestrials and their offspring then underwent a series of reincarnations, implying that many on Earth today are from Shuiyuexing. They can recover the memories of their past incarnations, back to Shuiyuexing, through the “Mind Wave Meter.”
Due to the prominence of references to the lost planet, Lin’s group is often called “Shuiyuexing.” However, it is also known by several different names, including “Weishi Shencheng Goutong” (唯识深层沟通, Consciousness Only Deep Communication) and (in English) “Awaken Spirit-Mind Science Center.” This group combines elements of Scientology (and science fiction novels by its founder, L. Ron Hubbard) with UFO lore found in the Galactic Federation and other movements.
In 2018, Chinese police began investigating Lin’s students who had formed groups in Mainland China. In 2022, the first police crackdown occurred in Yiyuan County, Zibo City, Shandong Province, resulting in 26 arrests. On May 26, 2025, it was announced that a new nationwide police operation had identified 4,000 Shuiyuexing members across twenty-seven provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, including Shandong, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Heilongjiang.
