The China Anti-Xie Jiao Association, controlled by the CCP through the United Front, has initiated a campaign to categorize Bodhi Gong as a “cross-border criminal gang,” applying Chinese organized crime laws to it.
Bodhi Gong, also known as Bodhi Meditation, was founded by Grandmaster JinBodhi, born Di Yuming in 1965 in Hebei province, China. Established in 1991, this Qigong organization has faced significant persecution following the prohibition of Falun Gong in 1999. Di Yuming professes to have acquired insights from Buddhist teachings in Tibetan monasteries and asserts that he overcame various childhood illnesses through self-cultivation practices.
Initially based in Beijing, Bodhi Gong rapidly gained traction and expanded its reach to Dalian and Guangzhou, ultimately establishing a presence across 26 provinces. In 1999, in pursuit of international expansion, Di relocated to Canada, and the movement initiated the opening of centers in multiple countries, including the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea.
Despite a crackdown on the organization in 2015 that resulted in the apprehension of over 100 leaders, Bodhi Gong has persisted. Ongoing legal proceedings in 2023 and 2024 have led to the sentencing of several members. Chinese authorities allege that Bodhi Gong’s branches in Taiwan and Malaysia engage in covert operations directed at activities within mainland China.
The China Anti-Xie-Jiao Association has characterized Bodhi Gong as “having nothing to do with religion” and dismissed it as merely a financial enterprise. Such assertions often precede escalated law enforcement actions against religious movements, hinting at a broader agenda to reinforce state control over spiritual practices.
